Music Interface

We were given the UNCG Music building as our project site. We were asked to create an interface that would act as an interactive edge to the music building and the community. Our tasks were to engage the pedestrians, the traffic, the local community, and the music building itself. I found that it was a process of experimentation with form that led me to my finial project.

I found that through this exploration of form and the idea of representing architecture as frozen music I derived my final form. I wanted my form to evoke a sense of inner rhythm and repetition. My form is made of cast iron and coated by an ivory or white outdoor fabric.

Represent the Music

We were given a piece of music and asked to construct a form the represented the essence or contrapuntal nature of the song. We were only allowed to use 12 bamboo sticks and 12 pieces of paper. My song was Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring  by Johann Sebastian Bach. The song, to me seemed to be flowing in a repetitive nature.

Group Music Representation

As a group we were asked to build a form that not only represented our music assigned- Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring, but also infused all of our individual forms into one. We still could only use bamboo  sticks and paper, but we were now allowed to use adhesives.

We were asked to recreate a light expression of our choosing using only a white box!

Due to the fact that my picture was of water I  added to telescope on the outside so it would have a more nautical feel. I love how the telescope draws you into the experience inside awaiting.





Next we were asked to recreate the experience with color. I choose to make one box using my coloraid paper and the other I choose to use stain glass. I still stayed true to form and continued fourth with the telescope construction.

I envisioned my space feeling very industrial. Therefore, I felt that an old factory converted into a studio apartment would be the perfect place for my dining room and my table. In construction the walls will be brick. However, I have chosen to keep the room white for proper space examination.

DIning Table: The Benchwirght Table

Out of the previous tables we examined in class , we were asked to further examine one table through the exploration of construction. I choose Pottery Barn's Benchwright Extending table in a wax pine finish

Because I loved the style of this table so much I decided to build a table that resembled it for myself.

Wood grain with grey pattern

 I used the natural grey marking found in the wood to create an interesting pattern for the table top.
